The former town hall, 'The Pepperpot' is a Grade 2 listed building, named for its Georgian pepper pot shaped turret, it has come to symbolise the town. Founded in 1611 by Thomas Sutton, Charterhouse School in Godalming is an independent day and boarding school. Before moving to Godalming in 1872 the school was formally on the site of the old Carthusian monastery in Charterhouse Square, Smithfield, London. Today pupils are referred to as Carthusians, and ex-pupils as Old Carthusians. Academically, the school ranks highly and has a top 60 placing in the A level league tables. Charterhouse also has an historic joint claim to having founded Association Football, which remains the main Winter sport at the school.
