The best areas around Chichester for first-time buyers
Chichester is the proud county town of West Sussex and is a cathedral city that’s steeped in Roman history while also offering an abundance of shopping, culture and leisure activities.
It goes without saying that Chichester has so much to offer as a place to live, however with average property prices at £388,261, purchasing a property in the area is not financially viable for the majority of first-time buyers.
Nevertheless, some of Chichester’s surrounding areas in West Sussex offer more affordable housing for first time buyers as well as access to the gorgeous countryside, beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle those who are looking to relocate in the area aspire to. So, in this article John Anstee, Director at leading estate agent Tod Anstee Hancock recommends some West Sussex alternatives to living in Chichester for first-time buyers.
First-time buyers account for the largest part of the UK property market
Figures that were released in February 2019, revealed that there were 372,000 first-time buyers in 2018, a number that propelled first-time buyers to become the largest buying group of the UK property market.
This is the first time in over two decades that first-time buyers have accounted for the majority of the UK property market, with the last time this happened occurring way back in 1995.
The number of first-time buyers has risen year-on-year, with a 2% over the previous year. In fact, this is the seventh consecutive year that the UK property market has seen a rise in first-time buyers, although it is worth noting that the percentage growth is beginning to stall from its high of 9% in 2016.
In spite of the growth in first time buyers, rising property costs in many parts of the country mean that few millennials can afford to get on the housing ladder depending on where they live in the UK and whether the Bank of Mum and Dad has lent a helping hand.
Why aren’t first-time buyers moving to Chichester?
It is evident that an increasing amount of people in the UK are becoming more willing to secure their position on the property ladder, so why is the percentage of first-time buyers in the city of Chichester so relatively small?
At the time of this article, the median asking price of Chichester properties is just over of £383,000, a price that is certainly out of range for most first-time buyers. In addition to this, Chichester was recently named as the UK’s 6th most expensive area for those trying to get on the property ladder, with the average property price up to six times the average household income.
Despite home development projects being completed within the area in a bid to attract more first-time buyers, it has been revealed that these properties will cost around £250,000, a figure that is still out of reach for many first-time buyers.
