You’re never short of things to see and do in the thriving seaside town and harbour of Littlehampton, a jewel on the West Sussex Coast.

From its award-winning beaches, stunning architecture and bustling harbour to serene spots along the River Arun, Littlehampton has something for everyone.

There is evidence of human activity around the town dating back to prehistoric times, though it was from the late 18th Century onwards that Littlehampton began to transform from a fishing community to a beauty spot. Romantic poets including Shelley, Byron and Coleridge were drawn to the serene harbour and the town eventually bloomed into a prosperous Victorian holiday destination.

Littlehampton now has a population of around 30,000 and includes the settlements of Rustington, Lyminster and Wick that lie a short distance outside the main town.

Living in Littlehampton

When the tiny hamlet of ‘Hantone’ appeared in the Domesday book in 1086, there was little evidence that it would evolve into the flourishing seaside town we see today.

Take an invigorating stroll along one of the award-winning beaches or while away a day enjoying the historic harbour park and marina. Littlehampton boasts some stunning modern architecture that rests easily alongside the traditional charms of the seafront.

Regular ferry trips operate on weekends and school holidays, a relaxing way to explore the River Arun. Several festivals and events take place in the town, including an annual bonfire procession. Stage by the Sea offers a chance to enjoy theatre in a unique environment.

As far back as the 1920s, Littlehampton became known as ‘The Children’s Paradise’ and there are a wealth of diversions, parks and days out for youngsters to enjoy in the town to this day, including the miniature railway which has chugged its way along the seafront since 1937. There are also modern leisure facilities, retail parks and a sports centre in the urban district.

There are five good primary schools serving Littlehampton including Lyminster, River Beach, St. Catherine's, White Meadows and Georgian Gardens. There is one secondary school, The Littlehampton Academy.
